Marc O'Reilly & Jasper Høiby - The Monique Sessions EP Review

Waterford native Marc O'Reilly has been consistently putting out brilliant track after track for the last number of years. His blend of blues rock has garnered him many fans across the globe and last year saw his music being used in a big US TV show.

Jasper Høiby is a Danish jazz bassist known for his high energy performances. He has released 8 albums with his band Phronesis. He is currently making music with his other band Planet B.

The two met when they both performed on Kairos 4Tet MOBO award winning album "Statement Of Intent". An impromptu jam at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in London led to them record "The Monique Sessions" EP together in Cork's Monique Studios.

The 3 track EP begins with "Steal Love". The song is a typical O'Reilly offering with his brilliant imitable vocals. The addition of Jasper's bass adds a whole new dimension and compliments Marc beautifully.
"The Scottish Widow" follows in the same vein although this time it comes with a Celtic tinge. The jazz virtuoso is let loose on the second half of the track and plays at a frenetic pace.
The EP closer "Healer" is the more rock central of the three. There's just so much going on in this song. It's damn enjoyable to listen to.

"The Monique Sessions" EP is nothing short of superb. It's a good thing that these two men found each other because the result is 3 quality songs. Hopefully this isn't the last time Marc and Jasper record together.
